Nottingham City Council's Constitution
The Constitution is part of the Council's corporate governance framework which defines the systems and processes by which the Council leads, directs and controls its functions and relates to its communities and partners.
The purpose of the Constitution is to set out how the Council conducts its business, how decisions are made and the procedures that are followed to ensure that these decisions are effective, efficient and transparent so that the Council remains accountable to local people. Some of these procedures are required by law while others are a matter for the Council to determine. The Council will exercise all its powers and duties in accordance with the law and its approved Constitution.

Nottingham City Council has adopted the 'Strong Leader' and Cabinet model of Executive Governance as set out in the provisions of the Local Government Act 2000 (as amended), and this is reflected throughout the constitution.
The constitution is a live document. When referring to it for procedural guidance, please do not save any part of the constitution for reference, always use this online version which is updated continuously. This is particularly important with regard to the Scheme of Delegation as delegations may be withdrawn, extended or revised at any time.
Understanding the Constitution
The Constitution is divided into 7 parts. The 7 parts form the Constitution of Nottingham City Council under the Local Government Act 2000 and associated Directions and set out the basic rules governing the Council's business.
